Flashback: Orientation '05

Look at that, there's still room for more.

As promised, I've posted a few of the old pictures of my first orientation in 2005. That was the year when my colleagues and I first enrolled into the Business School. We were the first batch of the college. These pictures I've posted were dated 3 years ago.

Team Bluebird, with me, Cybercanon and Sai in it.

The orientation has been a tradition in many campuses around the world for generations, so everyone got to experience this activity, whether they like it or not. The purpose is to encourage the freshman/juniors to get along with each other, a.k.a breaking the ice, as well as developing that sense of self confidence. All these will benefit the students in their studies and future career.

We were forced to do midday aerobics

Being ragged by the super seniors is imminent, but it only occurs during the orientation session. After a couple of years or so, it is the new seniors role to rag the new juniors. Orientation doesn't have to be considered extremely harsh. It is actually a highly beneficial process and as a matter of fact, it's a lot of fun.

No, there were no uniforms back then.

Unfortunately, my colleagues and I couldn't get the opportunity to conduct the orientation for our new juniors due to our sudden change of schedule with our Industrial Attachment this year. What was formerly a 3 month attachment in the first quarter and another 3 months in another quarter in year 2 ended up being a straight 6 month attachment for us right at the end of the syllabus. Our attachment commenced early this month so it kind of like clashed with the registration and orientation dates for the new students in the Business School.

Nevertheless, its beyond our control and we just pursue our industrial attachment. Even I personally feel that our graduation next year matters more to me right now. In fact, I've spent too much time in school (3 years) and I really needed a new environment for a change.

Back in the old days, the campus was actually smaller. Our classrooms were even smaller than what we all had now (PD/BNF/02 was located in one of the incubators with the rest of the 1st year seniors). The president of the student council was Yamin at that time, and the seniors were really cool.

Back then there was no proper sound system, laptops were still pretty rare and not a single shutterbug on sight. But the orientation was pretty much the same all year round, except for the theme. Orientation 2005 was, I believe, the best orientation I've ever experienced during my time in the Business School.

As far as I could remember, Ms Nelia was still teaching, and so was Ms Halimahtun and Ms Susilawaty. There were merely 200 students on campus, not as much when compared to the numbers right now. It was only in 2006 when the 2 huge blocks were completed and we moved out of our teeny tiny incubators. The student centre (currently being used as examination rooms) used to be the staffroom for all tutors. Oh, and the worst thing about that time was, there was NO CANTEEN! Fortunately, our super seniors were operating their business projects selling food for our hunger driven soul.

2005 was also the time when the following occured:
  • B-mobile was launched and 3G was first introduced in the nation. Everyone went mobile video conferencing crazy... for a while.
  • Mawi became the champion for the 3rd Akademi Fantasia and quickly rose to stardom.
  • Youtube went on-line.
  • The weather started to get warmer due to global warming.
  • Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges in his child molestation trial.
  • Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 americans living in the affected areas of eastern North America.
