Expansys develops low-cost call centre solution for SMEs

Expansys Technologies, a home-grown content provider, has unveiled a product which will allow small businesses to provide call centre-like services to customers.

Expansys Technologies Managing Director Keeran Janin said the product, dubbed AskRobin.com, uses the short message service (SMS) to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) provide customer service support to clients.

AskRobin will pool businesses into one contact point for customers using web technology. "What we want to do is to offer SMEs a low-cost solution where we would pool together all the SME-level businesses, giving them a very easy, low-cost way to connect and also to provide a gateway for customers to connect to," he said.

By using the AskRobin service, he said, consumers could benefit from a universal number to contact all businesses and lower the cost by pooling together customer services into one resource, thus making it convenient for them to reach businesses in the country.

BAG Networks launches web-based accounting solution

BAG Networks yesterday launched a web-based accounting system targeted at small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a bid to harness business potential in the country's nascent private sector.

After months of being in the beta-testing stage, the web-based accounting solution, dubbed Ikhlas, was unveiled to entrepreneurs at the Empire Hotel & Country Club.

Invited guests were given the opportunity to test the system, and were briefed by the Ikhlas team on the benefits of the system.

The system, which targets "young companies", is a simplified version of an accounting system which replaces accounting jargon with simple layman's terms such as "money in" and "money out".

Bonus Day: All roads lead to ATMs

AS EARLY as dawn yesterday, queues had already formed at the front doors of ATM booths around the country as the sun rose to greet what Bruneians have come to call "Bonus Day", when civil servants receive their remunerative reward for a year of hard work and dedication to their profession.

Traffic jams plagued key commercial areas throughout the day, particularly in Serusop, Bandar Seri Begawan and Kiulap, causing minor gridlocks at some intersections and testing the patience of motorists in search of parking spaces at already full car parks.

An officer at the Fisheries Department who asked to be named only as Jafri said he had a hard time looking for a parking spot. He had to park two blocks away from the TAIB branch in Kiulap and walk, only to end up at the wrong end of a long line of people stretching all the way out of the building.

"I came all the way here from Muara as the ATM machines in my area were out of order. It was difficult to find a parking spot earlier and it didn't occur to me that Kiulap was going to be jammed," he said.

Asked what he will be spending his hard-earned bonus on, Jafri replied, "The new school term is just around the corner and, like every other year, my wife and I will prioritise buying books, stationery, uniforms and other school supplies for our four children."

Mohd Asri, a father of two, said that he had been waiting outside the bank since before it opened for business.

He explained that he chose to make his withdraw at the counter because the queue at the ATM spilled out all the way to the next shop unit.

He added that the ATMs had preset limits on the amount that could be withdrawn by the same person within 24 hours, and that since it was Bonus Day, he wanted to withdraw more.

"I promised my eldest son I would get him his first video game console as he had passed his PSR exams this year with flying colours," he said when asked what he was going to spend his bonus on.

"Other than that, I have some loans to settle, and the remaining will go into my emergency fund," he added.

Mohd Khairul, a security guard at the TAIB branch in Kiulap, said that he saw a long line of people even before the doors were open, and more people kept pouring in throughout the busy morning.

"It took less than two hours for our ticket counter to reach 200. On normal days we usually reach that figure at the end of the day," Mohd Khairul said.

He added that additional security guard was posted for the day to ensure the safety and smooth serving of customers. "So far everything is under control. Everyone is cooperating in queues," he said.

Some people were willing to spend more than an hour in the long queue, even in the hot sun, to withdraw their hard-earned money.

Fendi, who lives at Sungai Akar, came all the way to BIBD's Kiulap branch to withdraw his salary from the counter. He had been waiting for his number for almost an hour when he was interviewed by The Brunei Times.

"It is something we all expect. Whether people came early or late, they still have to wait in line. I prefer withdrawing from the counter instead of from the ATM because, in my past experience, the machines ran out of money too quickly," he said.

"Though I have to wait longer for the counter service, it's good for me as it keeps me from the temptation of entering figures on the machine higher than I really need."

Over the years, he has learned from past mistakes and learned to practise smart spending and budgeting, Fendi explained.

"I don't really owe anyone or the bank much and I'm always thrifty, so I will definitely be able to save more this year. I'm only going to spend some on basic necessities," he added.

"It is an unusual sight for me," said Dayanti, a fresh graduate who just started her career in the government early this year.

It was the first time in her life she had received a bonus, said the 25-year-old, adding that she became more and more anxious the longer she spent in the long queue for the Standard Chartered Bank ATM at Hua Ho Manggis Mall.

"The excitement is there as I'm about to receive my first bonus. Now, I finally understand the thrill experienced by my friends and family on Bonus Day," she said ecstatically.

"I've been advised by my parents for many years not to splurge my hard-earned pay, so I've decided to give both my parents half of my bonus as a way of giving back to them after all the sacrifices they've made in raising me and getting me to where I am now," she said.

However, she added, "Though a little treat wouldn't hurt. I know I've been working hard for the past few months, so I'm still going to use my money to go shopping, but I'm just going it to spend here in the country as I want to support the economy, too.

"Besides, new year is coming, doesn't that call for a little celebration?" she added.

A government teacher who declined to be named said that he saw all the cars heading to the banks and that traffic was congested, but that didn't stop him from coming for a quick withdrawal at BIBD headquarters' ATM.

"My obligations drove me to the bank today. Paying the bills and the car loan as well as spending for my children's new school year are what got me on my feet this morning.

"There is no time to lose. The school holiday is nearly over and we will be very busy by the time the new year kicks in," he said.

"I did enjoy the previous years when we received our salaries and our bonuses four days earlier, as it gave us more time to check bookshops for better offers and buy school items such as stationery for the children," he said.

iPhone Killer?

Potentially the smartest smartphone ever. Will the N97 win the battle of the smartphones this year? Will it crush the iPhone and take over its throne as the current touch-screen smartphone king? After all, it's a Nokia, the brand with a very large market share in the mobile phone industry. You can never go wrong with the big N.

Consumer Fair Part 3 @ ICC

Today's the launching of the 3rd Consumer Fair held at the International Convention Centre, as well as another round of the Brunei Cybergames Tournament hosted by Ranoadidas. Being jobless that I am, I popped by to ICC with my camera in the nick of time when the launching ceremony was held this afternoon. The guest of honour to commemorate the launch was Pehin Dani, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

I'm gonna be here again tomorrow. My brother's gonna be playing Rockband with his friends. It's been many months since the last time he entered the Cybergames tournament and I do hope he wins again.

Looking Back 2008

HAPPY NEW YEAR, READERS! Hope you all had a blast during the countdown last night. Well, I didn't, coz I'm still bummed from my corrupted external hard disk. Losing 300GB worth of data isn't something that you wanna celebrate for new year's eve. My HD is currently in recovery mode using a special recovery software which has been a really sloooooooowww process and I've yet to recover my important documents.

Nevertheless, I should move on despite this tragedy. At least after this I'd have a fresh new start for the year with a reformatted 300GB hard disk. Anyway, its the time of the year for my 'Looking Back' post. I really enjoy writing this every year, and now here's a quick recap of my life in 2008.

First off, 2008 has been one heck of a crazy year. Its not really bad, but its not all too good either, but crazy! At the age of 25, I've been trying to live my life to the fullest. I think my long-term goals have been met, which is my education. I was in my final year in The Business School, sitting for my nerve-wrecking final exams and got through it with flying colors. 3 years in The Business School sure feels like a long time, I forgot how my life was before I even got there.

Things have been going very well as of late, unlike the past 2-3 years, financially speaking. The 6-month industrial attachment at Armada Properties (which I'm grateful for) had somewhat helped me with that transition. My attachment there has been a fulfilling one and it was nice to be back in working mode after 3 years in class. However, I'm already missing school life. In fact, I still have a long way to go, or perhaps, half-way there. Graduation is just a few months away and I need to revise my plan for the next phase. That HND course in ITB is first on my checklist.

What else is there to talk about? Family? They're all doin' great. Health? maintained. Friends? My network is growing. Love life? I'm still single and available. New look? just growing my hair. Vehicle? Still driving my old Nissan. iPod? Still good as new. Clearly I'm just going with the flow. I'm determined to get there. I just need to be more patient, and enjoy what I have now. Even though I'm left behind by my old friends by 4 years, a set back that has become a motivational drive for me to get back on track, I know that in the end, age is just a number and what really differentiates between me and everyone is in here *taps forehead*.

Last night I had a fortune cookie and the note says 'Success doesn't come to you. You go for it.'

Finally, I'm very happy to say that my resolutions for 2008 have been fulfilled. Well, not entirely. What I wanted to achieve for last year, being my highest priority, was to discover my true potential, harness it and benefit from it. Indeed I've discovered what I've been looking for all these years. Photography is my new-found passion. Although I've been shooting for the past decade, it is only up to this year that I've began to learn the true fundamentals of photography. Add to that the use of graphic design software, blogging, and basic marketing skills which I've learned from my 3 years studying in the Business School, these are tools that really helps with my work flow.

I guess this is where I belong. I'm not a trendsetter or a cult-follower. It's true that owning a dSLR has become a trend these days because they're getting more affordable over the course of time. But there is a thin line between owning a dSLR and Photography. I'm not following this trend, I'm learning the heart and soul of photography. I see people come and go; got themselves a brand new entry-level dSLR and sell 'em off the next few months coz they either just didn't have the time for it or lost interest (even their photoblogs were no longer updated). Well I'm not gonna say much about the trend epidemic that's been going on in the country, though it did turned me off whenever people think that I'm following the trend, despite the fact that I've wanted to get a digital SLR for years since the time when those things cost a kidney. I wanted to be a photographer, not a gadget hobbyist.

I got my first digital SLR in May, and it was one of the happiest moment of my life, to finally be able to get one after all this years, a Nikon D80. I believed I've made the right choice. The rest is history.

This is what I've started doing, and I intend to do this long term. Wedding photography is a big business here, but is also a war zone for most photographers. A battlefield, where only the best survives. Nevertheless, I'm still very new in this field, and there's just so much to learn if I wanted to enter this arena. As what a senior photographer once said to me, "we all had to start somewhere".

I don't consider myself a professional photographer, nor do I consider myself as an amateur. With very limited gear and only less than a year experience gained, there's still much more to work on, e.g. technique, post-processing, equipment, portfolio, networking. But to me, all this is an investment, and I wish to reap the rewards out of it. I've always dreamt of earning something from what I'm good at and this could be one of 'em. Its a start.

I guess that literally describes my resolution for 2009. It has been a smooth transition. I've discovered my potential in 2008, and now I'm gonna fully harness it and earn from it in 2009. Its gonna be a more challenging year this time but I'm just gonna enjoy the ride.

The Night Pre-Wed

Special thanks to Zadm for inviting me to tag along with him on his pre-wedding photo-shoot for his clients last night. It was an opportunity to be able to volunteer, observe and participate in his project in order for me to learn more about photo-shooting pre-weds. Last night was even more of a challenge as his clients requested it to be done at night in Jerudong Park from the playground all the way to the garden with the colorful fountain.

After last night's experience, I find pre-wed photo-shoot quite a chore, what with all the gears and equipment that needed to be carried around from one point to another in order to achieve a perfect lighting setup, but the satisfaction was indeed there after hours of photo-shoot, and I learned a lot from this tag-along with Zadm, a young local wedding photographer of 2 years experience in the field. I'm still new at this, and there's still so much more to learn...

Havoc Photo Sale, Day 2

Yesterday marked our 2nd day of our photo sale at the Business School. Our good friend Wali lent a helping hand on the accounts and collections side as we proceeded the bookings for the 2nd batch. Response has been very positive thanks to the 1st batch bookings of last week which caused the spread of word of mouth throughout the campus.

By 4.30 pm, bookings for the 2nd batch has closed and we're now in the phase of compiling the bookings and preparing them for print. Next batch will commence next Saturday as well as collection day for those who haven't claimed their photos yet.

Big thanks to Wali for assisting us in the Havoc photo sale at Incubator 3 yesterday.

Havoc Photo Sale, Day 1

Warning: Images may be too blue for your monitor. Adjust at your own risk.

The photos are finally up for sale! Yesterday was merely booking day for our juniors interested to purchase their photos we took on the previous Business School function a week ago. Big thanks to Kevin of Ex-Zone for lending us their incubator for our display station. Not bad for the first day, the response has been very good. We've received very positive feedback on the number of bookings we've garnered throughout the day.

Took me a while to draw that

All photos will be printed in standard 5R size and will be sold at $2.00 per piece. Bookings are still on-going, which will carry on for every Saturday of the week. The first batch is now in their printing process at a renowned printing studio and will be available for collection next Saturday 1st of November (the only day of the week which we are available due to our attachment on weekdays). Those who have missed yesterday's booking list may proceed on collection day.

Marriz holding a printed sample

Most of the juniors stormed our station in Incubator 3 yesterday to have a glance at their photos displayed on our laptops. Bookings were made by filling up special forms indicating their details and the image numbering. We were at first hesitant about crowd control but yesterday went pretty well than expected. See you all again next Saturday.

This is what happens if portrait-oriented images aren't adjusted on the monitor

The one and only Cybercanon

Here's an interesting fact. Incubator 3 used to be a classroom for ND/BNF/07, which was Sai's group. Sai and his colleagues used to be in this incubator throughout their first year from mid 2005 until 2006 before their first industrial attachment. My PD/BNF/02 class with Cybercanon was just next door at that time when Business School was a lot smaller. So many fond memories when we were there yesterday.
